     Scissor vs Shear
What's the difference between a scissor and a shear?  The traditional definition of a scissor is--  "A cutting instrument resembling shears, but smaller, consisting of two cutting blades, with handles, movable on a pin in the center, by which they are held together." A shear, besides being larger, also has been defined as having a handle for two or more fingers of the users hand.  But today the definition has evolved to something less precise.  Hairstylists call their delicate precision tools "shears;" barbers often refer to their larger and heavier finger tools as "scissors," yet their toothed thinners are called "thinning shears;" dressmakers call their three fingered, heavy-bodied shears, "scissors" (unless they are the pinking or large upholstery type) and veterinarians and dog groomers use surgical scissors and grooming shears. It seems these terms are almost interchangeable.
